GMA Celebrates Ghanaian Seafarers
On the 25th of June, which marks the International Day of the Seafarer, Ghana Maritime Authority joined the world to celebrate and appreciate Ghanaian seafarers.
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) established the Day of the Seafarer to recognize seafarers’ unique contributions to global trade and economy. These individuals form the backbone of maritime operations, facilitating the movement of goods across oceans. Their work extends beyond mere transportation; it encompasses environmental stewardship, safety, and resilience.
The International Day of the Seafarer, observed annually on June 25th, serves as a global tribute to the men and women who navigate the world’s oceans, ensuring the smooth flow of international trade.
Seafarers, who often work in challenging conditions, play a pivotal role in maintaining the global economy and civil society.
This year’s celebration was marked at the Tema and Takoradi branches of the Ghana Maritime Authority on the 25th and 26th of June 2024. The Deputy Director General (Operations and Technical), Mr Kojo Asemanyi, along with other Management Members of the authority served the Seafarers at the Tema Office as they went through the processes for acquiring their certification. They did this by directly interacting with and vetting seafarers’ documents, while reminding them to always ensure a safe working environment. Seafarers were presented with souvenirs as a token of appreciation for their wonderful contribution to the nation and globally.
At the Takoradi Office, officers from the Authority visited vessels at the Takoradi Port to appreciate seafarers and presented them with souvenirs as a token of appreciation.
The theme for this year’s celebration “Your top tips for safety at sea” underscores the active role seafarers play in creating a safer maritime workplace. Spending extended periods at sea, they must adhere to safety protocols, pollution prevention measures, and emergency preparedness to avoid unpleasant situations.
As we celebrate with Ghanaian seafarers, we recognize their continuous dedication, resilience, and commitment. Their work ensures that global trade flows smoothly. On this International Day of the Seafarer, we express gratitude to these unsung heroes who navigate the vast seas, connecting nations and shaping our interconnected world.
We say Ayekoo!! To all our gallant seafarers.
